The 8th Conference of Confucius Institutes around the world took place on December the 7-8th, 2013. The Confucius Institute at University of Szeged was represented by Lívia Szentmártoni and Zhang Xuemei directors. In representation of our partner university, Shanghai International Studies University Xu Baomei and the General-Secretary of SISU Confucius Institutes and International Chinese Education Center, and Ge Qichao, the vice-dean of SISU Institute for International Cultural Exchange also participated in the conference.


The Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged has second time organized the karaoke talent show where single and group competitors with 13 songs entered for the competition.

The SZTE Confucius Institute celebrated its 1st year anniversary on 28 November 2013. What made the occasion highly unforgettable is the Rector’s welcome speech, the birthday cake, nice Chinese pop music and the hilarious party.

On 8 November, Friday afternoon, some students were lucky to take part in an exciting Chinese program which was held at the Karolina School by the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged.


Karaoke is extremely popular in China: after work, as a closure of a friendly or business meeting, millions of Chinese people call the night by singing.


This lecture is about studying in Shanghai, especially studying at SISU. It will introduce you the advantages of this great university; the development and present situation of its education for foreign students; its various programs for foreigners; its various scholarships and how to apply for them. It will show you its beautiful campuses, accommodations and foreign students’ wonderful campus life and activities.


The Chinese Paper Cutting program held on 24 October has clearly proven that the Confucius Institute emphasizes not only the importance of Chinese language teaching but also to spread Chinese culture to a wide audience.


The Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged is looking for university students undertaking voluntary work: administrative tasks and participation in cultural programs.


The Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged launches an HSK language exam preparatory course for students taking the exam on Sunday, 1 December and everyone interested.


The generation shift in which the 5th generation headed by Xi Jinping took over control of the Party and the most powerful positions of the state, started a year ago and is practically finished by now.


As part of the Autumn Cultural Festival of the University of Szeged our Confucius Institute organizes a three-session free taiji training. The training is held by our teachers.


Together with our friends and students, the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged celebrates the arrival of autumn, the holiday of family and friendship on 20 September. According to Chinese traditions, the Moon is the most complete on the sky on this day. Chinese families get together at this time of the year to admire the shining full moon and eat some delicious mooncakes.

In early September 2013, the 17th International „Tisza” Fish Festival is organized, which is one of the largest and most important gastronomical and cultural event in Hungary.

On 24 August, 2013, the Confucius Institute at University of Szeged participated in the Youth Festival of Szeged, at an exclusive location of its ’Civic Village’.

Vice Rector Pál József welcomed children, some of whom might become a student of the University of Szeged in the future.


The group of 50 children from Sichuan and their accompanying teachers, education office leaders and diplomats arrived to Hungary on 25 July. These children are from families which are victims of the April earthquake. They were invited to spend 12 memorable days in Zánka, Budapest and Szeged by Ujhelyi István, Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly and at the same time President of the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged. Organizers would like to introduce Hungarian history, culture and language to the students through trips, boat trips, sightseeing in Szeged and Budapest.

On 4 July 2013, almost 50 Chinese businessmen of more than 30 Chinese companies from 11 fields of industries came to visit the University of Szeged. The aim of businessmen coming from the East China province of Tianjin was to find partners in Szeged and the Southern Great Plain Region of Hungary.



On 5 June, in the name of Chinese-Hungarian friendship, a gala dance performance was organized by the World Bridge Foundation and the Confucius Institute at University of Szeged to honour the visit of Zhou Tienong, Vice-Chairman of the Chinese National People’s Congress.

The system of student exchange programs between Hungary and China, Szeged and Shanghai is about to extend during the next couple of years.


The Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged launches a 4-session calligraphy course with regard to the great interest surrounding previous courses. Participants get to know the history and development of Chinese calligraphy, get an insight into the symbolic world of Chinese characters and learn the professional brush strokes.


All visitors are welcome to watch the movie version, a sequel to one of the most successful Chinese television series!


Everything on the sky and the earth is characterized by continuous change: in spring things wake up, in summer they become complete, in autumn they go through eclipse and finally in winter they restore themselves.


The Hungarian semi-final of the 12th Chinese Bridge Competition (Chinese language competition of university students) was held on 15 May at Budapest Business School. The event was officially opened by Xiao Qian, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Hungary. A welcoming speech was given by Jakab Péter, Deputy Head of Department for Asia and the Pacific of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Szemlér Tamás, Dean of Budapest Business School.

Pop Up Hungary

Between 3 and 8 May, 2013, together with 13 other higher education institutions, both the University of Szeged and SZTE Confucius Institute participated in an event called Pop up Hungary organized by Balassi Institute and the Embassy of Hungary in Beijing, introducing Hungarian higher education on Xi’an and Yinchuan.


Wang Anyi is one of the most excellent Chinese authors – she is referred to as the glittering rose of Chinese literature. She was born in Nanjing but spent most of her life in Shanghai.


Within the Day of Szeged event series the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged welcomes visitors interested in Chinese culture by an exhibition.


Witihn the „Day of Szeged” Festival, on the last Sunday of May children are going to be in the centre of attention: the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged welcomes children with a wide range of exciting and colourful programs.


On Sunday, 12 May 2013, the official Chinese language exam (HSK) of the People’s Republic of China was held at the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged for the first time. Application for level 1 and level 2 were open to our students, both for the written (HSK) and the speaking part (HSKK).


On 20 April, the city of Yaan in the province of Sichuan was victim of an earthquake. More than 200 people died and the number of injuries exceeds 3000. The associates and students of the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged expressed their solidarity on Thursday afternoon.

Hungarian-Chinese relationships are not restricted to protocol contacts any more: beyond economic and cultural cooperation there is a strong friendship connecting the two countries, emphasized Tibor Navracsics, Deputy Prime Minister on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the II. Conference for Partnership of Hungarian and Chinese Local Governments held at the castle of Gödöllő. The city of Szeged was represented by Tibor Papp, foreign relations officer of Szeged Mayor’s Office, Lívia Szentmártoni and Zhang Xuemei, Hungarian and Chinese directors of the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged.


The Great Wall Association of Friendship between Chinese and Hungarians announced an art competition with the title „5000-year-old China” for Hungarian kindergartens and primary schools. The primary objective of the competition was to draw children’s attention to the multicolour Chinese culture and encourage students to prepare related artistic works.

What are works of art? How is the intellectual power of art reflected? How are the works of art to be understood? These questions are the most fundamental and most significant ones in the field of humanities.


Ministry of Education of P. R. China offers Chinese government scholarship for the students of EU member countries. This programme is a full scholarship program which sponsors Chinese language students, general scholars and senior scholars with the duration of one academic year. For 2013/2014 academic year, 198 scholarships (excluded 2 continuous studying students) are available. The deadline for application is April 30, 2013.

Recently appointed Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Hungary, Xiao Qian, paid a visit to the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged on 24 March, 2013 and participated in the brief introduction of the Institute.


The first meeting of the Advisory Board of the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged was held on 18 March at Shanghai International Studies University.


The delegation of the University of Szeged attended the China International Education Exhibition Tour in Shanghai on 16-17 March, 2013. The two-day exhibition was visited by several thousand people.

On Sunday, 10 February 2013 Millenáris Park Budapest gave home to the Chinese New Year Festival organized by the Chinese Cultural and Art Centre and an endowment called Subjective Values.


HE. Xiao Qian, the newly appointed Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Hungary, held a reception for assumption of office at Hotel Marriott on 15 January. Gábor Szabó, Rector of the University of Szeged and Lívia Szentmártoni, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged also participated in the event.


The Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged organizes a Lunar New Year Festival for their Hungarian and Chinese friends. Visitors will have the chance to attend lectures on the Chinese New Year, Lantern Festival and related traditions.
