The 8th Conference of Confucius Institutes around the world took place on December the 7-8th, 2013. The Confucius Institute at University of Szeged was represented by Lívia Szentmártoni and Zhang Xuemei directors. In representation of our partner university, Shanghai International Studies University Xu Baomei and the General-Secretary of SISU Confucius Institutes and International Chinese Education Center, and Ge Qichao, the vice-dean of SISU Institute for International Cultural Exchange also participated in the conference.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged has second time organized the karaoke talent show where single and group competitors with 13 songs entered for the competition.

The group of 50 children from Sichuan and their accompanying teachers, education office leaders and diplomats arrived to Hungary on 25 July. These children are from families which are victims of the April earthquake. They were invited to spend 12 memorable days in Zánka, Budapest and Szeged by Ujhelyi István, Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly and at the same time President of the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged. Organizers would like to introduce Hungarian history, culture and language to the students through trips, boat trips, sightseeing in Szeged and Budapest.

On 4 July 2013, almost 50 Chinese businessmen of more than 30 Chinese companies from 11 fields of industries came to visit the University of Szeged. The aim of businessmen coming from the East China province of Tianjin was to find partners in Szeged and the Southern Great Plain Region of Hungary.

The Hungarian semi-final of the 12th Chinese Bridge Competition (Chinese language competition of university students) was held on 15 May at Budapest Business School. The event was officially opened by Xiao Qian, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Hungary. A welcoming speech was given by Jakab Péter, Deputy Head of Department for Asia and the Pacific of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Szemlér Tamás, Dean of Budapest Business School.
Between 3 and 8 May, 2013, together with 13 other higher education institutions, both the University of Szeged and SZTE Confucius Institute participated in an event called Pop up Hungary organized by Balassi Institute and the Embassy of Hungary in Beijing, introducing Hungarian higher education on Xi’an and Yinchuan.

On Sunday, 12 May 2013, the official Chinese language exam (HSK) of the People’s Republic of China was held at the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged for the first time. Application for level 1 and level 2 were open to our students, both for the written (HSK) and the speaking part (HSKK).
On 20 April, the city of Yaan in the province of Sichuan was victim of an earthquake. More than 200 people died and the number of injuries exceeds 3000. The associates and students of the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged expressed their solidarity on Thursday afternoon.

Hungarian-Chinese relationships are not restricted to protocol contacts any more: beyond economic and cultural cooperation there is a strong friendship connecting the two countries, emphasized Tibor Navracsics, Deputy Prime Minister on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the II. Conference for Partnership of Hungarian and Chinese Local Governments held at the castle of Gödöllő. The city of Szeged was represented by Tibor Papp, foreign relations officer of Szeged Mayor’s Office, Lívia Szentmártoni and Zhang Xuemei, Hungarian and Chinese directors of the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged.
The Great Wall Association of Friendship between Chinese and Hungarians announced an art competition with the title „5000-year-old China” for Hungarian kindergartens and primary schools. The primary objective of the competition was to draw children’s attention to the multicolour Chinese culture and encourage students to prepare related artistic works.

What are works of art? How is the intellectual power of art reflected? How are the works of art to be understood? These questions are the most fundamental and most significant ones in the field of humanities.
Ministry of Education of P. R. China offers Chinese government scholarship for the students of EU member countries. This programme is a full scholarship program which sponsors Chinese language students, general scholars and senior scholars with the duration of one academic year. For 2013/2014 academic year, 198 scholarships (excluded 2 continuous studying students) are available. The deadline for application is April 30, 2013.
Recently appointed Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Hungary, Xiao Qian, paid a visit to the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged on 24 March, 2013 and participated in the brief introduction of the Institute.

On Sunday, 10 February 2013 Millenáris Park Budapest gave home to the Chinese New Year Festival organized by the Chinese Cultural and Art Centre and an endowment called Subjective Values.
HE. Xiao Qian, the newly appointed Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Hungary, held a reception for assumption of office at Hotel Marriott on 15 January. Gábor Szabó, Rector of the University of Szeged and Lívia Szentmártoni, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged also participated in the event.
