Wang Anyi is one of the most excellent Chinese authors – she is referred to as the glittering rose of Chinese literature. She was born in Nanjing but spent most of her life in Shanghai.
This large and colourful city gave her inspiration and willingness to write. She is the author of 9 novels, winner or several awards and her most successful work The Ballad of Eternal Sorrow won the most significant Chinese award of Literature: Mao Dun Award. This current lecture presents the history and everyday life of Shanghai through the above mentioned ballad. The Ballad of Eternal Sorrow is the life story of a 40-year-old woman living Shanghai describing her emotions without any mannerism in a melancholic and moving style.
