On 5 December 2014, 5 o’clock in the afternoon, Xue Yanping’s book entitled „21 g love” was introduced at Libri Bookshop in Szeged, where the guests could learn more about the book and about its background from the writer personally. Dr. Cao Hang, director at SZTE Confucius Institute, led a conversation with the writer.
Xue Yanping was born in Beijing in 1957. After the Cultural Revolution she was among the first students who could apply and go to university, after which her major became literature. Besides China and the life in Beijing, her novels deal with the world of love and soul. Her book entitled Lazuri stone, which represents the life of an ancient, closed community’s life at the Forbidden City in Beijing, was awarded with a honorary prize which is the so-called Lao Sö Prize in 2012. The “21 g love” is her first novel translated into Hungarian.

“The weight of a human soul is 21 grams – they say. 21 grams love is therefore such a feeling which fulfills our soul, which is able to overcome the fear of death, and overcomes the passing of time as well.”
Xue Yanping’s main character is a divorced, unemployed woman who is tired of life and unexpectedly she has to face with a deadly disease as well. In the shadow of death, she experiences that kind of feeling, which helps her through the serious disease. Her soul is filled with love, while her body is tormented with unbearable pain. This is the feeling of “deadly love”, which is raised by the death-conquering eternity.
We strongly encourage those readers who are not yet familiar with the work of the writer!
