The chancellor’s first visit to China was during the time when he represented Flextronics which is an electro technical company. Later he gave a lecture to the Asian country’s Prime Minister – turned out about Devecz Miklós at the event organized by the Public Coffee House of Szeged and SZTE Confucius Institute.
His very first visit to China was in 2002 as one of the members of the delegation accompanying Medgyessy Péter Prime Minister. At that time Flextronics could enter into such an agreement with Chinese partners that the assembly plant of a Chinese television company was placed to Sárvár. It was a very special business since cheap Chinese labor power attracted European investors to the Asian market. The assembly plant in Sárvár was an economical and fruitful investment for both parties as from this base Chinese were capable of supplying the European market. In addition, delivery time also shortened and production costs were cut by $ 6-7/ product.

Devecz Miklós was immediately “infected” by China and from that time on he visited this huge country several times. Shortly after we became part of the European Union the Chinese Minister took an official visit to Hungary, and then it was he who provided a brief summary about the aspects of future cooperation between the two countries.
The chancellor thinks that it is obvious for everyone that now China became the greatest power of the 21st century and therefore we must learn more about it. What we must know is that is not easy to do business with Chinese but it is worth. In fact Chinese culture is based on patience and that is why no one should expect quick decisions. However, if they have already made up their mind and make a decision, they consequently insist on it. This is also true about Chinese politics, it is not only important to know the local conditions, but also we must be able to adapt to it. The world’s most populated country is not a sleeping dragon anymore, what more it is very active and even the world can feel its economic rumble. The ever existed huge social gap in the country is getting to be better which is due to infrastructural investments.
During the lecture, Szeged also came up as a topic, in sense of the university’s Chinese relations. He was happy to mention that Chinese language is taught in several primary schools in Szeged. He also added that he wishes to have more Chinese students at the University. More than 40 million students attend higher education in China. It would be a great achievement if 400 students out of the 40 million would come to our university. One of the world’s most modern laser centers is going to be set up in Szeged, which could have a key role function. Moreover, China is also interested about European media and communication, because they already know that this is one of the many ways to make their products and culture known for Europeans. For this reason, there is a high possibility that our university will have a key role in developing relations between Hungary and China in Europe.
